Tata Nano Launch Scheduled for Oct 2008

Nano translated into Gujarati, the native language of the Tata family founders (The Tata Group), literally means "small". Although small in size this new vehicle which has been specifically designed for the Indian domestic car market is anything but small in terms of market expectation.

After many production hurdles and whispered over-runs, the innovative and much awaited eco-friendly city vehicle touted as "the peoples car" is now scheduled for release in t0 the domestic Indian market in October 2008. Already causing a stir in the car market, anticipation for the Nano release is high. People appear to be putting off buying a new automobile, prefering to wait until the release of the Nano, mostly due to its very competitive pricing of 1 Lakh/1,00,000 Rs ($2,300 USD) for the brand new basic model. The nearest competitor being the Mahruti 800 (a rebadged Suzuki Alto) which currently sells for 2.5 Lakh/2,50,000 Rs ($5,750 USD).

Environmental issues have been addressed through the Nano's low carbon footprint; having lower emission levels than most two-wheelers currently being manufactured in the country today.

Pre-release marketing of the Nano is underway, with Ratan Tata, Chairman of Tata Sons, purported to be initially offering the Nano only to those who do not currently have cars. The Nano is perceived to be the natural replacement for many of the highly noxious two-stoke vehicles of India's roads. Tata is, in addition, working on the development of using compressed air as vehicle fuel in partnership with a french company.

Global interest in the Nano has been healthy. On January 10th 2008, the day that Tata unveiled the vehicle, the Tata Motors website saw almost 7.9 million hits!

The Tata Group has always been one to watch, and it will be interesting to see if the clever and cute Nano lives up to the hype and the peoples expectations.
